In response to reports that the Prime Minister has joined with four other European governments to block a European Commission proposal to create the EU's first legal nuclear safety standards, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, has called on the Government to explain why it is taking such anti-environmental action.

Norman Baker said:

"Once again, the Prime Minister is failing to take positive action to help the global environment.

"The only time we hear Tony Blair talk about the environment is when he is undermining it.

"He has done nothing to take Kyoto forward with Presidents Bush and Putin, nothing to stop the hazardous 'ghost fleet' entering British waters, nothing to support the elimination of dangerous chemicals, and now he's trying to stop important nuclear safety measures.

"Mr Blair, where are you when the environment needs you?"
