WALES: North Hoyle heralds new era, says Bates12.12.57pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 21st Nov 2003
Mick Bates AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson, today expressed his support for the expansion of offshore wind power around the coast of Wales and commended all those involved with the North Hoyle project. He said: "Wales has the potential to be self-sufficient in renewable energy, to be the renewables capital of Europe, but we need to recognise that potential; given this, I was amazed that not a single member of the LAG cabinet managed to be present at the event". "I am greatly encouraged by the spirit of consensus and hard-work which enabled this project to be one of the easiest windfarm constructions in planning history; NPower and Greenpeace deserve special thanks". Mr. Bates attended the opening of the North Hoyle offshore windfarm this morning. He is a lifelong supporter of renewables, who has promoted a balanced and community-based approach to energy production, both as a Welsh Liberal Democrat, and as chairman of the National Assembly Sustainable Energy Group (NASEG). "Wind energy is increasingly popular amongst the general public but we need appropriate planning guidance in place to allow local communities to decide for themselves", said Mr. Bates, "Wind power allows us to address the use of problematic fossil fuels and the process of climate change which they accelerate".
