Toll motorways are not long-term answer - Thurso

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 9th Dec 2003

Commenting on the opening of Britain's first toll motorway, John Thurso MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, said:

"Whilst this may be an interesting idea, projects of this kind can only be stop-gap measures. Privatised motorways are not the answer to Britain's long-term congestion problems.

"The real challenge is to move from indiscriminate taxation of car ownership towards targeted taxation of car use through road pricing. That would be a fair deal for both motorists and public transport users."
