Does the Prime Minister know the environment exists? - Baker12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 13th Apr 2004
Commenting on today's report from the Government's Sustainable Development Commission, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said: "This is a damning indictment of the Government's failure to realise the scale of the challenge facing us. "We need a gear change. The Prime Minister needs to start showing leadership in taking forward the decisions necessary to protect our environment and our planet. "Sadly, he doesn't even seem to realise the environment exists. He never mentions it in his speeches, he has sidelined the issue in a throwaway department, DEFRA, and all the key indicators are going in the wrong direction."
