Pollution related deaths show need for environmental focus - Baker12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 18th Jun 2004 Responding to a report in the The Lancet, which claims that across Europe 100,000 children a year die due to environmental pollution, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said: "These figures should be a cause of serious concern for governments across Europe. Protection of the environment is essential for both public health and economic development. "Allowing the current levels of pollution to continue is simply not an option when so much distress is being caused and so many young people's futures are being destroyed. "These statistics should serve to bring a new and greater focus on environmental issues and pollution"
