More toll roads are not the answer - Thurso

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 6th Jul 2004

Responding to reports that the Government is to announce plans for a second toll motorway to run alongside the northern section of the M6 motorway, John Thurso MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, said:

"Privatised motorways are not the answer to Britain's long term congestion problems. New roads are environmentally damaging and very expensive.

"The Government has already admitted that we simply cannot build Britain out of jams.

"The real challenge is to move from indiscriminate taxation of car ownership towards targeted taxation of car use through road pricing.

"Alistair Darling should be offering a structured and well thought out plan for national road charging, not piecemeal solutions."
