Nuclear industry must explain plutonium loss - Baker

2.58.03pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 17th Feb 2005

Commenting on the reports that 30kg of plutonium has "gone missing" from Sellafield, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Norman Baker MP, said:

"If this plutonium really has gone missing this is a very serious issue. If the figures are wrong then this looks like serious incompetence from an industry that deals with highly dangerous resources.

"Those who argue for a new generation of nuclear power stations ought to reflect on the inability of the industry to ensure the security of the power stations it has already got."
