Recycling Figures Unfair To Best Councils- Doughty

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 8th Mar 2005

Commenting on the release of recycling figures today, Liberal Democrat Defra Spokesperson, Sue Doughty MP said:

"The overall decrease in household waste is very welcome. But waste minimisation must be the first priority.

"The Government's figures fail to reflect the fact that some councils have made excellent progress in minimising municipal waste.

"For example, councils who encourage people to take responsibility for the disposal of their own waste through home composters appear to be doing worse on today's figures than councils who collect waste for central composting.

"The Liberal Democrats are calling for a change to the way Government figures are presented to give a fairer deal to councils who minimise waste and to ensure there is an incentive for councils to pursue the best environmental options."
